Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year

This week we learnt about Chinese New Year. We found out about the traditions involved with Chinese New Year. We worked out our zodiac animal and learnt about the Year of the Dog. We retold the story of the Chinese zodiac and created lanterns and lucky red envelopes. In Maths we completed a Statistics challenge in which we had to sort, tally and graph a bag of lollies. The children were very pleased to get to eat the lollies at the end of the session!

Here are 2 of our 're-tellings' of the Story of the Chinese Zodiac:

The Rat Wins

Once upon a time there was a rat and a cat. They were good friends. The king wanted all the animals on China. He wanted to make years out of them. The rat and the cat decided they would go together to see the king. The cat fell asleep so the rat carried on without the cat. Soon the rat came to the palace. There were so much animals.
Then the king said "We will have a water race. Whoever wins will have the first year".
The rat said to the ox "Could I float on your head?"
The ox said "since you can't swim, you can".
"Yay" said the rat. So he sat on the ox's head. When the rat was close to the end he jumped on land and won the race.

The Story of the Chinese Zodiac

Once upon a time there was a rat and a cat and they were friends. One day they went to the jade emperor but couldn't go because the cat slept. So the rat went by itself. All the animals except the cat went. The jade emperor said,  "Animals, who ever wins from each of you can have their year". But the rat couldn't swim so he think and think. Then he knew what to do. He told ox and said, "Can I go on your back?" Then he said "yes". So, they both swam then the rat jumped and so the rat won.
