Our Pet Rocks

Our Pet Rocks            As part of our focus on innovation, the children designed and created their own Pet Rocks this week. They then used the strategy of 'upcycling' to be innovative and create habitats for their pet rocks with recycled materials, i.e. cardboard boxes, lids, bottles, coloured card, pipe cleaners etc. The children were very taken with their creations and excited about taking them home.

West Harbour Gardens Last week, the Year 2 team went on our annual trip to West Harbour Gardens Residential Home. The children had been practising and preparing for this for weeks and were very excited when we ventured out the school gate.  We walked to West Harbour Gardens where we sang a selection of songs to the residents and then gave them gifts that the children had made. After having an ice block, we headed back to school. We walked through the Luckens Reserve Walkway and completed our adventure at the Luckens Reserve where we had a picnic lunch and then a play on the playground. The children (and teachers) were exhausted with achievement, having walked 6kms, and were pleased to be back at school.

Our Whanau Morning          On Friday 21st September the Year 2 team hosted our team Whanau Morning. The children had been working very hard in preparation and were extremely excited. With this term's focus on learning more about who we are and our family connections, the children wrote invitations to their family members to come and share some of their learning. I think the invitations must have done the trick - because our turn out was fabulous and the classrooms were bursting with guests. My sincerest thank you to all those who came to join in the fun. It meant a lot to the children, and a lot to me. As part of our inquiry into culture this term, we have learnt some dances from other countries around the world. We started our morning off by demonstrating these dances to our guests in the gym. After our last dance, the children then asked their guests to join in; and we all danced 'The Bird Dance' together. Corbans Estate Arts Centre Today Room 7 & 8 went on our trip to the arts centre. When we took part in a workshop called 'My Story Rocks'.  First children painted river pebbles with white paint and then they designed some symbols that represented things that are special to them. The kids had lots of good ideas and it was really cool to hear the stories they were sharing about themselves. After designing their symbols the kids drew them on their pebbles and decorated a calico bag to keep their 'story rocks' in.
