Welcome back to Term 3

Welcome back to Term 3       It's hard to believe that it is week 4 already. Our term started with a busy time - and it is going by incredibly quickly!  In week one of this term Room 7 organised and ran the Junior School Assembly. The children were very excited about the event and were counting the sleeps until the occasion. With practising their speaking bits, learning and practising our item, judging which class should get the environment award, and cool cards to award, we had lots to do! This term our learning focus is about our personal identity and cultural heritage. We started this learning about what the word 'Individuality' means and exploring the idea of what makes each of us special and different from each other. Our assembly item reflected this, as the children each shared one thing that is special about them, and sang a song called 'Individuality'.     We are continuing our learning focus now by discussing where our fa...

Sherbet making

Sherbet making This week we continued our Science focus by learning about the chemical reaction that occurs when we eat sherbet. After tasting icing sugar - and describing it as sweet, and then tasting some citric acid - and deciding that was sour - we mixed the two together with some other ingredients and made our own sherbet.  We followed a recipe and learnt about how important it is to measure with measuring cups and spoons accurately.    We wrote our own recipes for sherbet and were very excited to take some home to share with others.

Squishy bag art

Squishy bag art       Today we did another experiment to help our learning about the primary and secondary colours. We were each given a piece of paper and a plastic ziploc bag. After deciding what secondary colour we wanted to make, we chose the 2 primary colours of paint we needed, and they were put on the opposing corners of the paper. We then put the paper inside the ziploc bag and sealed it. Next, we used our hands on the outside of the bag to 'squish' the paint towards the centre; where the 2 primary colours mixed and made our secondary colour.

Clean those teeth!

This week we have been investigating a change that happens to our body and is very common in Room 7 - wiggly and loose teeth! On Tuesday we did an experiment, in which we used a toothbrush and toothpaste to 'clean' and scrub a boiled egg that had been soaked overnight in Coca-Cola.  We thought the egg looked yuck - all sticky and brown - to start with, but were very impressed with the effect of the toothpaste and toothbrush! To make further connections with our learning, we all took home a Colgate Tooth Defenders Challenge - to see if we can all brush our teeth morning and night over the next month!

Our Trip to Tip Top

Our Trip to Tip Top Today we went on our much anticipated trip to the Tip Top factory. We spent some time at the playground before going up the steps to the waiting room. Here we did some colouring while waiting for our tour to start. We were then taken for a walk through the factory to see the big machines that make the ice cream mix, the massive freezer room, and the ice cream packaging room. We saw the area where they make the sauces and melt the chocolate to add to the ice cream. The highlight for many was getting to eat our choice of ice cream at the end. We were all happy but tired by the time we were heading home!
